History of Hillcrest

In the early 20th century, Hillcrest—originally known as the Buchanan Tract—was a new residential development situated on Skinker Road, just south of the Clayton streetcar line and near Washington University and Art Hill.

Promoted as an ideal suburban community, Hillcrest was designed with modern infrastructure for the time, including paved streets, sidewalks, sewers, street lighting, and other amenities.

In 1912, the land was put up for a forced auction when the original buyer was unable to complete payment on the $212,500 property. The auction, held at the St. Louis Real Estate Exchange, offered 50-foot lots with restrictions to ensure high standards of residential construction and neighborhood character.

With proximity to Forest Park, Wydown Boulevard, and key streetcar routes, Hillcrest quickly became a desirable place to live. Today, the neighborhood still reflects its early planning roots, blending historic charm with modern convenience.
